The weather right now may be unseasonably warm, but it won’t last forever. Do you have your winter emergency rations ready — and no, we don’t just mean s’mores supplies and hot cocoa. While ice and snow can make for a wintery wonderland, they can also create dangerous situations, including power outages. Make sure your family is prepared with a winter emergency kit.
Make sure you have battery-operated lanterns and/or indoor-appropriate candles and plenty of matches or a lighter in the case of a power outage
- Purchase a battery-operated backup for your computer or electronic equipment
- Store bottled water and non-perishable food items such as energy or granola bars and canned foods (don’t forget a can opener) in an easy-to-access place
- Prepare for your four-legged family members as well by having stored food on hand and plenty of water for them
- Have extra blankets and warm clothes such as hats and gloves available should you need them
- Purchase a first-aid kit and assure that everyone in your home knows where it is located
And your home isn’t the only place you can be prepared, road hazards could leave you stranded waiting for roadside service. Make sure you have supplies on hand, including:
- Gloves and hat
- Blankets
- Bottled water and snacks
- Emergency strobe or flashlight and batteries
- Cell phone car charger
- Ice scraper
- Jumper cables and road flares
Get your emergency supplies together, then get outside and enjoy this gorgeous weather while it lasts!
