The Saint Louis area was plagued by spring storms this year. Driving around town, we still see home after home in need of repairs to roofs, siding, guttering and more. We’ve received several calls from owners of DH Custom Homes and Hayden Homes residences. Their homes are in need of storm damage repair and they’ve turned to DH for advice and direction. We’re proud to know that our homeowners see us as an on-going partner and we’re here to support them as they restore their homes after the spring storms.
There are several things to consider when selecting an individual or company to assist with repairs:
Do your homework:
After a storm moves through, it’s not uncommon to see a slew of out-of-town contractors saturate the market, bombarding neighborhoods with door-to-door soliciting and yard signs. We aren’t saying those companies are all bad, but please be careful and do your homework. Do your homework. Look for an established, licensed or bonded, and insured company. Request references! Don’t be shy about asking. Reputable, respected contractors and companies should have a laundry list of glowing testimonials and will be proud to share them with you. Last, contact your local Better Business Bureau to check for complaints. The St. Louis BBB has a searchable online directory of local businesses.
Get it in writing:
You should always insist on a detailed, written estimate for storm damage repairs. The estimate should include a materials list, labor charges and the approximate starting and completion dates. Also, have the payment procedures and terms outlined in writing. Finally, make sure you know who you will receive material and labor lien waivers from. You should receive them in exchange for payment. Dot your I’s and cross your T’s. This is an important step!
Consider the materials:
If you live in a DH Custom Homes or Hayden Homes residence, then you know the difference high quality materials can make in your residence. It’s important that the high level of service and workmanship you seek is matched by high quality materials. You want to maintain the integrity of your home for years. Choose quality materials that will last for years, protecting the investment you’ve made in your home. Carefully review any available material warranties and call the manufacturer with any questions before proceeding.
