Christmas Decorating and Holiday Safety Tips

In a couple of days families will gather to enjoy a wonderful Thanksgiving feast and in the weeks following will most likely begin to start the Christmas traditions of decorating and trimming the tree. This time of the year is filled with family, memories and traditions, but do not forget to keep it safe.

An article from HGTV gives some simple tips for keeping your holiday decorating festive and timeless. And here are some safety tips as you decorate your home with festive lights:

Remember to:

  • Not overload electric circuits or use worn extension cords
  • Use lights that have been safety tested and have fused plugs
  • Inspect lights for exposed or frayed wires, loose connections and broken sockets
  • Replace burned out bulbs with the same wattage bulbs.
  • Use outdoor lights that are certified for outdoor usage so they will endure the weather
  • Follow all manufacturers’ directions when setting up outdoor and indoor lights
  • Use weather-proof, GFCI outlets for the outdoors and surge protectors for indoors
