Unless you are a professional, it is sometimes difficult to visualize and understand the value of a homesite to build a new home. If the lot features something a little different in terms of topography, shape or size, it can be even more challenging to envision how intimate and unique your yard could be. Many homesites that you might pass up by at first glance could be perfect for you and your family with a little planning.
For a real-world application of rethinking the backyard, we took a look at a few available homesites at our premiere subdivision The Summit at BaratHaven in Dardenne Prairie, Mo. We commissioned expert horticulturalist, Jim Tricamo of Landscaping Pros, to develop a look specifically for one of these homesites. And he had some awesome ideas!
These homesites back to a natural limestone boulder retaining wall. While some may see this as limited in terms of size or potential, others see it as an opportunity to create a custom outdoor sanctuary. Check out what Jim was able to draw up for this property.
As you can see, Jim used the wall as a feature to create a natural backdrop for a backyard oasis. He has built in a limestone fireplace that would look as though it is part of the wall. The limestone frames in the patio and plantings creating an area that is perfect for entertaining guests or hanging out with the family. The limestone wall provides privacy. In addition, there are plenty of inviting areas of grass for children and family to gather and play.
Blending indoor style with outdoor views can have dramatic effects, as well. One of our homeowners whose home back the limestone feature created a striking open family kitchen area with vaulted ceiling, rich finishes and floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace flanked by French doors. We noticed the room has a beautiful lodge-like atmosphere and the view of the backyard limestone complements the space very well. It adds a rustic flare that makes you feels like you’re in the mountains.
