Few design elements can add a sense of traditional charm as well as a window seat. They remind us of a romantic time when people would take a respite from the day-to-day entanglements of life to enjoy spare time. They inspire pursuits like reading, journaling or simply taking in the natural beauty of the outdoors.
For a recent DH Custom Homes project, we had the opportunity to create a window seat for a luxury custom home. In a child’s bedroom, we installed a window seat within a drywall alcove we created around a twin window. We then outfitted each side of the niche with 14” drywall bookcases for charming storage. To enhance the natural romantic associations of a window seat and create an inviting nook, we also arched the drywall above it from bookcase to bookcase. We then worked with the homeowner to create the right color selections and can lights to further personalize the space.
All of these elements work together to create something that is much more than just a special accent of the room. Now, this child can enjoy adventures in reading and learning in a space that harkens back to classics such as “The Great Gatsby.”
