If you’re from the South, or have spent much time there, you’ve likely done your fair share of front porch sitting. Outdoor living is a staple in southern states and they take great pride in creating welcoming, cozy porches for their homes. But have you ever sat down your sweet tea, stopped rocking and looked up?
There’s a tradition that dates back for generations in the south. You may have happened across it and not known the true meaning behind the hue. What is this tradition, you ask?
Painting the porch ceiling blue!
We recently incorporated this Southern charm into a custom home in Kirkwood. The homeowners wanted to bring the classic feel to their Midwest home – and the results are beautiful!
This front porch might look familiar! We first shared this home in a post about the special touch we incorporated in the gutter downspouts. Take a closer look at the corners of the porch. You’ll see that the downspout runs down THROUGH the porch rather than snaking its way down the steps. We love the polished look that this extra touch adds to the overall curb appeal of the home.
We are head-over-heels in southern LOVE with this porch. The classic black shutters pair perfectly with the light blue ceiling!
Not just any blue will do –
Are you interested in doing the same in your home? Well it’s important to note – not just any blue will do! The tradition lies in a few select shades of blue. Our homeowners opted for Haint Blue. Legend has it, this soft blue-green hue will prevent evil spirits from entering your home! Others say it supposedly will cut down on mosquitoes as well. We’re looking forward to putting that theory to the test in warmer months. Sweet tea and summer evenings on the porch, anyone?
